Young men more than women fans
There were 33 deaths from dog bites in France over the past 20 years, 16 of which involved children under 5 years. According to the survey of dog bites made eight emergency hospitals (Annecy, Bethune, Blaye, Fontainebleau, Le Havre, Limoges, Marseille and Verdun), 485 people used the emergency room for dog bites, between May 1 and June 30, 2010. This work, which was conducted under the responsibility of the Institut de Veille Sanitaire (INVS), in collaboration with the Association of Veterinary Behaviorists Zoopsy shows that all ages are affected, even though 36% of victims less than 15 years. And there is no significant difference between the proportions of women (49%) and men (51%), except between 30 and 39 where they are more often bitten than their companions. Concerning the animal is an adult male in most cases. Of all injuries reported, 47 were by a German shepherd, 41 of a labrador, a jack russell 27, 16 a Beauceron, 15 of a border collie, as a boxer and a Rottweiler. “But we must not draw hasty conclusions about the dangerousness of dogs respectively, because we do not have their distribution throughout the national territory,” said Bertrand Thélot, InVS epidemiologist and an author of the report. “We know there are about 4.5 million dogs in France, but it is possible that some breeds are more represented than others in certain areas.”
